From Thursday, February 1 at 6:00 pm CT to Sunday, February 4 at 5:59 pm CT, Empoleon Tera Raids will make their debut on the Paldea map in the Gen IX game. They will then reappear the following week from Thursday, February 8 at 6:00 pm CT to Sunday, February 11 at 5:59 pm CT. These Starter Tera Raid events don’t sound that exciting anymore since all Starters are catchable in bright red And purple thanks to Indigo disc DLC, but this is still the only way to get the Pokémon with the exclusive Strongest Sign. Additionally, players who enjoy a challenge may want to see if they have what it takes to defeat this mighty penguin.

The peerless Empoleon won’t be easy to defeat—especially if you don’t know what to expect. Here’s everything you need to know to beat Empoleon Tera Raid in the Gen IX game.

Unfortunately, defeating Unrivaled Empoleon is not as simple as other seven-star Tera Raid of the past. What makes Empoleon Tera Raid so challenging is its Competition ability, which increases its Special Attack by two stages whenever one of its stats is lowered. This is especially bad in solo raids where NPCs will use Pokémon with abilities and moves that lower the raid boss’s stats, like Intimidate and Leer.

Therefore, the key to defeating Empoleon is to bring out its Competitive abilities. In other words, Do not use any moves or abilities that can lower Empoleon’s stats, or use a strategy that alters or ignores its capabilities. This may sound easy, but things can still go horribly wrong when working with NPCs or other players who don’t know how Empoleon’s abilities work.

If you are trying to solo raid, Avoid NPCs with Menace users like Staraptor, Tauros and Arcanine. For example, I ran a raid with NPCs with Heracross, Gardevoir, and Garganacl and luckily they didn’t lower any stats to trigger Empoleon’s Competitive ability during the entire raid. The NPC group you get stuck with in a solo raid depends on luck and you may have to return multiple times, so group raids are much easier as long as everyone is on the same page .

In addition to the penguin’s annoying abilities, you also have to consider its fighting style, Tera’s type, and its moves. There’s a lot to keep track of so we’ve broken it all down for you.

What kind of peerless Empoleon is it? Pokémon Scarlet And purple Tera raid?

Empoleon is of course one Water/steel type Pokémon, and it does Type Ice Tera for this specific Tera Raid event. This means you can hit it for super effective damage with Fighting, Steel, Rock, and Fire attacks, although Empoleon is quite good against Fire and Rock Pokémon. That’s why Fighting and Steel are the more optimal types to bring to this raid.

What moves does Empoleon Wushuang know? Pokémon Scarlet And purple Tera raid?

Empoleon’s moveset isn’t as annoying as its abilities, but it relies on setup strategy making it quite cumbersome. It opens the raid by setting up snow with Snowscape, increasing Defense while making Blizzard 100% accurate. It continues to increase the Defense stat with Iron Defense after the raid.

All of Empoleon’s attacks are special to take advantage of its Humility (+Special Attack, – Attack) and any of its Competing powers. If it receives more than one Competition boost during the raid, it will be hit hard with any move it makes.

The best counters for the unparalleled Tera Empoleon Raid are at Pokémon Scarlet And purple

As mentioned before, the peerless Empoleon is difficult to defeat, but using the right counterattack can increase your chances of success. Iron hand is a solid choice for group attackswhile the Gen IX Fire Starter, Skeledirge, works surprisingly well in solo attacks.

Iron Hand is known to be one of the strongest options for Tera Raids and it has a good matchup against the champion Empoleon as it can attack its Ice Tera Type to deal super effective damage with attacks Combat Attack.

Normally, Iron Hand will start by maxing out its Attack stat with Belly Drum in exchange for half its HP, but this is dangerous to do in front of Empoleon if you don’t have a Monitor light or Defensive Cheer. Instead, it’s safer and easier to point spam Drain Punch while holding Metronome to increase the amount of damage dealt each turn.

Drain Punch should restore enough HP to Iron Hand to keep it healthy throughout the raid as long as Empoleon does not receive any competitive boosts. Terastallize into a Combat Tera Type as soon as possible to enhance your attacks. This worked well in a group raid with other Iron Hand users, and it was almost as successful in a solo raid (if I hadn’t exhausted the Drain Punch PP).

Skeledirge sounds like a surprise counterattack, as its Fire-type isn’t ideal when facing Water-type Pokémon like Empoleon. However, Skeledirge’s Unaware ability is perfect against Empoleon as it allows users to ignore their opponent’s stat changes, as seen in a video by popular Austin content creator John Plays. In other words, the Paldea Fire Starter doesn’t care how much Competition boost Empoleon gets because the penguin’s attacks won’t do extra damage. The only time you need to worry about a super powerful attack is when Empoleon disables Skeledirge’s ability for one turn. Whenever that happens, just use Protect to keep your alligator safe. Heal HP by Shutting Down Slack when needed.

And to minimize damage from Empoleon’s Water-type attacks, it’s important to keep the sun out during Sunny Days. This also powers Skeledirge’s signature move, Torch Song, which increases its Special Attack each time it is used. You will essentially become spam Torch Songs and use Protect, Sunny Day or Slack Off in turn as they are needed.
