Apple Watch Provides Help to Victims of Incredibly Violent Car Accidents

Five people had to be rescued from the car after the car crashed head-on into a palm tree, triggering the crash detection feature on a passenger’s Apple Watch.

Apple’s addition of collision detection to the Apple Watch has repeatedly saved lives, although it has been criticized for false alerts. Now the California Highway Patrol (CHP) credits officers with being able to quickly locate the crashed vehicle and take its injured occupants to the hospital.

According to KTLAA Hyundai Sonata with five people inside crashed into a palm tree on Highway 15 at Jurupa Avenue in San Bernardino Ontario. The vehicle had five occupants, and an Apple Watch belonging to one of the passengers was reported to local authorities.

“When officers arrived, they found a vehicle in a tree,” a CHP spokesperson said. told KTLA“[with] “The party of five is trapped.”

Two people in the vehicle were taken to the hospital, where one was reported to be in mild condition and the other was reported to be in moderate condition.

The incident occurred shortly before 2:00 AM PT on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.

Apple introduced collision detection in the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Series 8 in 2022. This feature works through a combination of sensors on your iPhone and Apple Watch.

This is because the sensor contains an accelerometer, which can cause false alarms during sudden stops. This is why roller coaster riders are particularly vulnerable to false positives.
